Acton gets piece of Hollywood action

ACTON -- A star-studded cast that includes Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin arrived in town last month to film scenes for the Hollywood drama "Labor Day," a film based upon the 2009 Joyce Maynard novel of the same name.

Those familiar with Maynard's tale will know this flick will likely not be the sugary, romantic comedy-type.

Rather, Maynard's story revolves around a man's boyhood memories of a New England late-summer day that instantly changes from dull to gripping when he and his mother pick up a hitchhiker who has escaped prison.

They later learn the fugitive is a convicted murderer.

Town Manager Steven Ledoux said crews arrived in Acton on June 25 and have been filming scenes at a ramshackle house on Piper Road. Ledoux said initial work at the Piper Road location wrapped up on Monday. On Thursday, the production team will shoot scenes at the Acton Senior Center, at 472 Main St. Ledoux said film crews will return to the Piper Road house on Aug. 3.

"Labor Day" also stars Tobey Maguire of Spider-Man fame and "Dawson Creek" actor James Van Der Beek, a Cheshire, Conn., native.

Winslet won an Oscar for Best Actress for her role in 2008's "The Reader." Brolin received a 2008 Best Supporting Actor nomination for his work in "Milk" and is also known for playing former Commander-in-Chief George Bush in Oliver Stone's presidential biopic "W."

Labor Day is directed by Jason Reitman, a Quebec-born filmmaker who also has "Up in the Air" and "Juno" on his Hollywood resume. Reitman is also credited with writing the screenplay adaptation of Maynard's book.

The film is on track for a 2013 release. According to the Internet Movie Database, other shooting locations in Massachusetts include Boston, Mansfield, Natick, Medfied, Medway, Belchertown and Shelburne Falls.
